Web Page.
Anacreon: Reconstruction 4021 is an old, but excellent space strategy game where you play the part of a budding Emperor, a would-be empire-builder. Your goal is the galactic conquest, and to do this you have fleets of fighter squadrons, jumpships, hunterkillers, and more at your disposal. While initially beginning with only a few old ships left over from a previous era, there are worlds out there to be conquered and enlightened with the Empire's technology, and soon they'll be assembling factories, mining metals, and building starships. Of course, other empires are out there also, and they'll be fighting to develop technologies, conquer worlds, and unify the galaxy before you.
The graphics (if you regard ASCII characters as graphics) in this game are primitive by today's standards, but the gameplay is not. Strategy is the word of the day here. For example, you must decide whether to have your worlds specialized and highly productive, but reliant upon elaborate trade routes (Which would be susceptible to enemy fleets if not carefully guarded), or having your worlds less productive overall, but self-sufficient. Rebellions can crop up, and new technologies pose entirely different questions, ie "With this new Self-Replicating-Mine technology, defense, and even offensive mining of my enemy's trade routes would be simplicity itself, or perhaps a Jumpspace disruptor to slow his fleets down to a crawl. With a Stargate I could send my attack fleets halfway across the galaxy in a single year, but then again, with an Industrial Complex, I could double the jumpship production of my entire empire!"
Best played with other Machiavellian types, the single player
game is still remarkably captivating. If you like strategy and
empire building games, and you value solid gameplay over flashy
graphics, you'll certainly want to check out this space empire
strategy game classic!
Anacreon: Reconstruction 4021 is a turn based galactic empire strategy game. The prologue to the introductory scenario sets the mood well:
"...When the First Empire finally
collapsed, the spasms and convulsions of its death were so
violent that the galaxy was thrown into a dark age that lasted
nearly a thousand years. Hundreds of worlds were devastated by
the great wars at the end of the era. Many more simply stagnated
and decayed as they lost contact with Earth. In the end, what was
once a cohesive and monolithic unit spanning the stars of known
space, degenerated into a dozen loose kingdoms trying to maintain
control over their own territories. As the dark ages progressed,
even these kingdoms disappeared. Entire worlds lost the
technology to travel across the stars. World by world the galaxy
regressed thousands of years in the history of humanity..."
From: The Seeds of Panemonde,
by Lord Jonathan R. Rowehin.
It is four thousand years after the collapse of the First Empire. Although not fully recovered from the cataclysm, the galaxy is slowly beginning to unite once again. Worlds have formed federations and federations have turned into empires. And although hundreds of worlds are still living unaware that other humans inhabit the stars, there is a renewed hope in the galaxy that a Second Empire will rise out of the first.
In this scenario, you will start out as the totalitarian ruler of a single earth-like world. For the past few years your world has been building up its starfleet, preparing to forge an empire out of the surrounding worlds. Though not as technologically advanced as the First Empire, you possess a few ancient ships, remanents of another era, that will help you in your conquests. Your ultimate goal is the unification of the galaxy, preferably under your flag.
